Notion ONE got their new web page design by running a design contest:
PageLabs needs a new website design

We're building a service-based web application for helping you optimize your website's performance, SEO compliance, and user experience.
1. Sites I kind of like: - http://mailchimp.com is similar in that they have a public site as well as an app to log into. I like the fact that they create a persona with their mascot. They have a bit too much color for me... remember, I dig white space. - http://brightkite.com isn't bad. It's not terribly unique, but it's compact and unobtrusive. 2. Sites I like a little more - http://basecamphq.com is minimalistic and it works well, especially the top third. I don't care for the black header (remember, warm and inviting), but they aren't afraid of white space. - http://chargify.com makes good use of space, they broadcast exactly what their service does, and that call to action button is front and center. Their A/B testing results found that the red button increased conversions! 3. Sites I REALLY like - http://www.threadless.com white space a-plenty. Balances left to right, good use of thirds. No frills. - http://printmecoupon.com great color balance with the orange font and blue backgrounds. Simple, clean, clear. - http://99designs.com - Love! Combine this with threadless or primetimecoupons and you'll win. 99Designs has most of the elements I'm after. Excellent command of white space, good use of font weights and colors, brand prominence, visible call to action, and a vary simple navigation structure.
PageLabs is an online tool for optimizing website though performance tuning, SEO, and user experience tracking. Users of the site are looking to pay from tens to hundreds of dollars per month to use the service. The logo needs to be creative and clever like many web 2.0 logos today. Preferably more flat than 3D. The home page needs to be creative and unique. If the home page should not look like it could be used with every other industry just by swapping logos. The colors should be warn and inviting and the page should make excellent use of white space. Please consider a good balance of colors in your palette. PLEASE take a look at the reference sites below. The content pages should be logically structured with really simple navigation. There should be ample room to explain the product with both text and images. Tips: * Keep the design simple and NOT busy. The best designs will clearly identify the brand and draw visitors in. Think clean and crisp. * You don't have to use stock photos related to laboratory work with scientists or beakers everywhere. The is an SEO tool, not a science lab. * Think minimalistic. Less is better! Think 99 Design site UI and layout. * NO dark/black headers and mastheads. * No reflections/page flip/"flash-like" elements. Please review the sites included for reference! Emulate them, in particular 99designs.com and printmecoupon.com
The target audience is tech-savvy and knows a good site when they see one. Generally we're looking at a male audience between 23 and 45 years old. Interests and pursuits are largely online and connected. For your reference I've uploaded a couple screen shots of the placeholder template and logo we're using today. Hopefully that will give you an idea of where we are today. Just keep in mind that it's a placeholder. I don't care if menus move, colors change, etc... as long as we get a design that will help us get the app skinned and launched. Regarding the logo, I like the idea of incorporating something other than text into the logo (e.g. the flask). I'm sure you'll have your own take on it!
