How George.bevis started their web page design journey

Company name

SpeedSell

Overview

High profile, TechCrunch-featured startup SpeedSell is the world's first "universal" trade-in site, where you can sell "nearly anything" with free collection from your home or workplace tomorrow. We're about to do a relaunch but early user feedback says that our new look (at http://preview.speedsell.co.uk) is considered amateurish, so we're reaching out to amazing designers to make it look amazing!

It's likely that there will be further work on other pages for designers who impress us in this contest.

Tell us a bit about who you are and the people you reach

Customers are in the UK. We are a mass-market service, with a demographic as broad as (for example) Amazon. People sell to SpeedSell because they value the ease and speed of the process, and because we are a 'trusted' buyer (more trusted than trading via an auction site).

Requirements

We want you to redesign the page at http://preview.speedsell.co.uk - it needs to remain exceptionally simple, but have a bit more "polish".

Our primary brand elements are supposed to be:
1) Extreme simplicity and usability
2) Really caring customer service
3) Totally trustworthy - you will definitely get paid, and quickly too.
... we know that the current design is better at emphasising (1) than (2) or (3)

Other points:
- We know that our existing design lacks personality, and we do want some added. Ideally in the same vein as "Ben and Jerrys" or Zappos - a real-world, friendly brand which looks after you and is a bit fun too. You may find illustration is the best way to achieve this - but keep it very very simple.
- beware of using photographs - they may add clutter. Icons can be considered if they have some personality (not boring stock icons please!)
- Ignore/delete the box which says "Welcome to our pre-launch preview site..."

Page descriptions

The existing design has various elements which should stay:
- The whitespace and Arial approach is partly to emphasise simplicity (like Google) but also because we will be co-branding the platform with other companies' brands in the future, and we need to ensure that our look-and-feel doesn't clash with their brands. Hence don't use lots of other colours or fonts.
- The logo should probably stay (though if you have ideas for how to improve it and give it more personality, we're interested)
- The colours should stay (yellow/orange, grey for text and blue for links - however the exact shades can change, eg you could use a lighter blue or darker grey). Other colours can be added but should be used sparingly/sensitively.
- We consider that using relatively few words on the front page is a good thing, to emphasise extreme simplicity.
- The functionality of the search box will not change, though if you have views on improvements to its look/feel then you can draw those up.

Example websites

The extreme usability and clarity of the Groupon product pages is an inspiration (though NB maintaining our whitespace approach is critical).

Examples of pages which use whitespace well, remaining both stylish and accessible are:
