Scott @ Q got their new web page design by running a design contest:
Modern Design for LGBTQ Travel Site
Check out Scott @ Q's Web page design contest…
Travel & Hotel
GayCities (http://www.gaycities.com) is the largest LGBTQ travel site with listings and user reviews of where to go, stay and eat in 225+ cities worldwide. (Like a gay tripadvisor) The primary entrypoint to the site is google search as our site is highly google optimized. The site is mostly used as a reference, but has a social component as well where users can review & like places, say which events they are attending, and message each other. We are an ad-supported business, so ad placements are an essential part of the design.
We've started a redesign of our popular mobile app, and we want to redesign the site as well. The site design should be inspired by the app, but need not match it exactly. We're looking for a modern and clean look with a lot of white space. We want imagery to become a more important part of the design. The design should be responsive and look great on mobile as well as desktop. We value simplicity and clarity (our current site could be improved a lot in that regard). Some sites we like: AirBnB (especially experience detail page), Opentable (especially restaurant list/search result page), Trip.com (list page and city home page).
We're going to start with just three of the pages on our site and once we land on a rough design direction, we'll ask you to move to other areas of the site (like the homepage and the city home page). Please use only fonts available on Google Fonts or Web Safe fonts. We will not embed text in images, everything must be doable via CSS. Listings page - eg. list of bars/restaurants http://newyork.gaycities.com/bars/ See attached app mockup as well Key elements: * Main site navigation (Cities / News / Site search / Login Info) * 970x90 ad below the main site nav * City navigation (New York - bars / hotels / restaurants /etc) - see trip.com for a good placement * Filters Filter by Neighborhood & By Tag * List of venues (using info from attached mobile mockup) * 300x600 ad * Potential: we like trip.com's city image at the top of the listings, but also like the more spartan look of AirBnB. Your call from a design perspective Listing detail page - eg. specific bar eg. http://newyork.gaycities.com/bars/428-therapy See attached mockup of mobile app * One large "hero image" for the venue * way to see additional images related to venue * Key elements from attached mockup: * Basic details - name, Percentage that love the place (heart %) * Buttons: Heart (or hate) & bookmark. * Friends who have been here * One line description (the mockup shows a paragraph, but we will limit it to one sentence (bold) * Address / Map * More details (phone, url, hours) * Upcoming events at this venue * Tags * Reviews * 300x600 ad Event Detail Page * Very similar to Listing Detail page * which friends are going * description (from facebook) * when * where * map (if address is given) * Note - the event imagery comes from facebook (see facebook event cover image) which means our choices are limited for imagery
What to avoid
No rainbows, rainbow flags, or typically "gay" cliches. Let the content be about the LGBTQ community, let the design be upscale & clean.
Once we get these main designs agreed, there will be other pages to design (like the homepage) , but I'd like to come up with a design "language" through these pages before we move through the rest of the site.
