esteele got their new web page design by running a design contest:
Boating related eCommerce homepage design needed
Check out esteele's Web page design contest…
I am in progress of a total re-design of existing website. Our existing site has a lot of room for improvement, and I want this new site to be awesome. This contest is just for the home page at this time, but if it looks great and my developers can implement onto WP, will probably work with the winner one-on-one to create at least category and product pages too. We build electrical panels for small/personal boats. They are 12Vdc switch panels. We do not do mega-yacht stuff... it's smaller (18-40ft) center console / bay-rider kind of boats. We also sell the pieces and parts needed to update/fix/repair electrical panels, so definitely want to highlight that too. One of our big selling points for the custom product is that we customize them to order for each customers. We can make nearly anything the customer wants. It is a relatively high-end and expensive product. People purchase it because they are proud of their boat and want it to look incredible. (our product is often part of a multi-thousand dollar project to update/repair/fix-up/restore a boat). Target audience: MEN! like 95% + men. And on the "manly-er" side of men. Not hipster type of men... more like sportsmen, outdoors, camping, fishing, hunting type of men. Also, some are more of a party/drinking type of guy. Men who work on their own boat. Men, who are proud of the boat, they work hard on it, and they want others to be impressed by their boat. Our ideal custom is also QUALITY focused. We build a quality product, and they only put quality stuff on their boat. They want their panel to be functional, utilitarian, and hand made with quality. Our customers are NOT necessarily really "internet people". No huge sliders, and not a whole lot of "lifestyle" photos. It's not an impulse product. It is both an emotional and intellectual sell.
"Bad-Ass", and not fru-fru. Images should be impressive... really "cool" electrical panels. Was kind of leaning toward blue colors (boats - so "water" is blue)... but am really very open on colors, so don't take that has a hard requirement. I already have a developer working on the site, and I like the layout they have proposed, but they are hard core developers, not artistic site design people... so I want to see what the more "design" centric community can improve upon it. I have a BUNCH of photos of electrical panels if you want to download these zip files: https://www.dropbox.com/s/rpc8qq3tn64h0hu/panel%20images%205-21-16.zip?dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/s/dypmvrk3zdz3u14/05-18-16%20switch%20panels.zip?dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/s/1xbadldayukkw81/05-09-2016%20switch%20panels.zip?dl=0
The reference website #1, and the attached PDF pretty much cover this, but here's the main points: 1) header and nav menu 2) flexible spaces to put image sliders or ads (my ads, I don't sell ads on my site. 3) email signup 4) links to categories (ie "browse by category") 5) want to plug / call-to-action / educate about my new super-cool "build your own panel" product 6) testimonials 7) About us summary (will link to full about us page) 8) maybe highlight some blog costs 9) FAQs 10) panel images / customer photos 11) satisfaction guaranteed message / badge
What to avoid
No fru-fru looking things. No girly colors (mostly male audience). While I have said "bad-ass" multiple times, that was to get the point across. I don't want profanity on the site.
I'm happy to answer questions, or send additional images or photos. I'd also consider highlighting a video (to be recorded later) with me speaking about the product, and maybe a time lapse segment showing a complicated panel being assembled really quickly.
