What industry do you think your business is most related to?
Tell us a bit about who you are and the people you reach
We are a startup in Sillicon Valley and we believe that the generation and storage of electricity should be owned and managed by every individual and not by a few monopolistic utilities and governments. We want to empower every individual to manage their electricity assets just like UBER has done with the car. We are developing a portable electrical vehicle charger which is able to charge the car battery and also discharge into the electricity grid. Because of electricity price variations throughout the day, the EV owner is able to buy electricity at off-peak times and sell at peak times, earning money from the car battery. The charger is portable and can be plugged into any electricity outlet unlike the fixed charging stations which are currently available in the US and deployed by private companies. The charger has a nosel that fits into the vehicle and a cable which plugs into the wall. Our target audience is EV owners who are looking for the convenience of a mobile charger and are interested in making money from the use of the car battery asset. They are modern and progressive thinkers, early adopters of leading technologies but also mindful of their electricity costs.
What inspires you and how do you envision the design for your business?
The existing portable electric vehicle chargers are bulky, ugly and impractical to users (have a look online for PORTABLE ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGERS). They are purely a technical tool that enables the car to be charged. It is not something that the user is particularly engaged with, it is simply a tool. Moreover, the user experience is bad: - It’s heavy - It’s cumbersome and require causes a lot of hassle before and after charging the vehicle: to take it out of the car, untangle the thick cables, plug it into the outlet and the car. Unplug it, arrange the cables and put it back into the car. We need you to design a new EV charger that: - Is easy to use, stylish and functional - Is something that the user wants to show off and be proud of. He feels good by having it on display while charging - Reflects our identity as a sustainable, green-thinking, cool and live-a-passionate-life company. - Deals with the cord management (preferably retractable), weight (3kg), safety, durability and protection issues. - Has a feature that can very elegantly display battery charge status - Seamlessly and elegantly integrates with the vehicle for transportation, eg. in the car trunk or another place TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS We are looking for something slick like Tesla's portable charger as per picture attached: - j1772 plug interface (to car). Check below for dimensions (in inches) - this converter must fit inside the device - DC DC converter (see picture for dimensions in inches) - a PCB same size more or less - Two IGBT transistors 4cm x 1cm x 2cm - Functional for portable handling/carrying - Preferably detouchable cable. If you want to add the cable, it shal be at least 5m (1cm diameter) - Should display the battery charge status via LED lights but no user interface / controls - Should have an easily identifiable feature by other drivers which makes them stand out, eg. Uber sticker
We are looking for the new Nest (thermostat) of Electrical vehicle chargers, or the iPhone of mobile phones. We want it to be a design item. Turn it into an desirable and stylish gadget. Required deliverable format: 3d printable.
