lordtrilink got their new app design by running a design contest:
Design a fun, innovative mobile messaging application!
Check out lordtrilink's App design contest…
Our app is an ephemeral messaging system for smartphones and tablets. It is designed to protect your messages (pictures, video, and text) both in transit, and when they have arrived at their destination, through patent-pending security measures designed to prevent screen capture and recording. Message senders are optionally able to view the reactions of their recipients, recorded during viewing via the device’s front-facing camera.
The app should be colorful, fun, a joy to use for both users young and old! We would like to use the “flat” aesthetic introduced with iOS 7. Ideally the design should use many familiar system UI elements and UI idioms, so that users can grasp the application very quickly.
All participants will need to design 6 screens. Registration Screen Login Screen Home Screen Friends Screen Profile Screen Reaction Screen *The winning designer will also need to design a Compose Message screen, the details of which will be provided after signing an NDA/confidentiality agreement. If the user is opening the app for the first time, they will be given the choice of going to the Registration or Login screens. Otherwise they will be taken directly to the Home Screen to view their messages. --- Registration Screen - This is where a user can sign up to use the Boomerang messaging system. The following personal info will be needed: Name (for display) Phone Number and/or e-mail address Password Confirm password The user will also be able to sign up with common social media services, such as Facebook, Google+ and Twitter. Upon signing up, the user will be asked confirm his/her device via e-mail or SMS. A short, 6-digit verification code can be used. --- Login Screen - This is where a registered user can log into the system. The following information will be needed: Phone Number and/or e-mail address Password The user will also be able to sign in with common social media services, such as Facebook, Google+, and Twitter. If the user is logging in for the first time with a particular device, he/she will be prompted to confirm the login with a short, 6-digit verification code. --- Home Screen - This is where a user can view a list of unread messages and select a message for viewing. In addition, he/she can start composing a new picture/video/text message from this screen. --- Friends Screen - This is where a user can view a list of his/her current contacts. This list will be synced with an external server. After selecting someone’s name, they should quickly be able to compose a message to that person. If they want, they should be able to view that person’s profile page. They should also be able to add/remove/block/report friends from here. Contacts will usually be added from the user’s address book; they can look up a user by phone number or e-mail address, and if they are in the Boomerang system, they will be added. If the user wishes to add a total stranger (does not know their phone or e-mail), he/she can add someone by their Boomerang ID. A Boomerang ID is automatically created at the time of registration, and uniquely identifies a user. --- Profile Screen - This screen allows you to view your friends’ profile (or your own). It should display the following: The user’s display name. The user’s Boomerang ID (unique address for receiving messages) The user’s profile picture (optional, with a placeholder if not available) The user’s cover photo (customizable) The user’s status message. The user’s violations (number of unauthorized capture attempts on message). If you are viewing your own profile, you should be able to change your profile photo, cover photo, or status message. -- Reaction Screen - Optionally, while viewing a message, the app will record the recipient's reaction to the message using the front-facing camera. After viewing a message, the recipient can choose to send the sender either a video or a still photo of the reaction. This screen displays after a message is finished viewing.
What to avoid
As previously mentioned, well-known UI and navigation idioms should used. We should stay away from unfamiliar interfaces that will take time or an extended tutorial for the user to learn.
