Unity Farm is about Community. Community Youth. Community Education. Community Welfare. Community Togetherness.
Youth, young adults, and students from local neighborhoods congregate upon Unity Farm for hard work. Young people engaging in the hands-on meaningful activity of working the land. Volunteering their time to hoe, weed, seed, till, hill, amend and cultivate the soil, tidy-up around the farm, and mill grain into flour. After a day of hard work the young people are rewarded with a good meal.
Advice, Education, and Support (via phone, email, webinar, and in-person) to small-scale locally-based farmers in Israel and Beyond. We teach small-scale farmers, as well as local volunteers interested in sustainable agriculture and local gardening, how to do what we're doing by applying sustainable and productive low-impact farming practices. This program has the additional benefit of strengthening Israel's friendly ties to other nations both regionally and globally.
Unity Farm's locally grown, freshly harvested food pantry. Our food pantry supplies locally and sustainably grown farm fresh produce (greens, fruits, and vegetables) and nutritious coarsely ground freshly milled whole grain flours to economically and socially marginalized peoples in and around Beit Shemesh and the Greater Jerusalem area.
"Malnutrition doesn't discriminate. It plagues the rich as much as it does the poor; young and old suffer from it. Although many of us have access to good food, way too many do not: the homeless, the young, the hungry, the poor, the elderly, the handicapped, the most vulnerable. Without proper nourishment, the ability to think and make good decisions, to maintain and build physical strength, to develop the will and spirit is greatly weakened. With good food comes empowerment." -Douglass DeCandia
Bringing people of diverse socio, economic, and religious backgrounds together in an atmosphere of tolerance, respect, understanding and friendship through our shared love of local sustainable agriculture as we learn to celebrate the diversity that comprises the people of Israel in general and of Beit Shemesh and the Greater Jerusalem area in particular.
