Tell us a bit about who you are and the people you reach
I am a new writer in science fiction and fantasy. I write short stories in both genres, and cross-genre. I also started writing my first book. Following discussions with some of you, I was better able to write the brief in a way that is helpful to artists. It is changed drastically.. Thank you for investing the time in messaging me. New designers, please check out the messages sent out with brief updates.
What inspires you and how do you envision the design for your business?
I love the art in science fiction and fantasy. It makes me lose myself in wonder. Be it dragons, space ships, sword and sorcery, or even maps or books, the art is always inspiring. And cool. My ideas, and your ideas: 1. I describe the direction I'm thinking of below. That said, if you are an artist-fan who already has art you like and think would be a fit here, I'd be grateful if you'd consider submitting that as well. 2. While I provide ideas below as you requested, and would be happy to see your rendition of one of them, PLEASE do share your own ideas with me as well. I went with "art" and "branding" on this project instead of "design" as your ideas on what would work or would excite you in your experience as a genre artist are exactly what I'm looking for. What I am looking to convey through the art: 1. Immersion in the genre. 2. When someone looks at the art they should get a sense of a setting being established. For example, if they enter the website, they would immediately approach it with an emotion or mindset we chose for them. (I will add information on this at the end, as it's a lot of text). Do's: Unless it's a specific idea I wrote below, please try and convey positive or neutral emotions. Don'ts: Unless it's a specific idea I wrote below, please avoid a dark setting and war themes. For the characters, please avoid scary and mean. Example ideas: 1. This one I imagine as simple and clean, but I'm not married to that. A dragon and a spaceship flying together (side by side, in a circle, yin yang-like, or around each other as they soar into clouds). The dragon could be anything from classic, to a half digital one. The ship could be anything from sophisticated to simply cartoonish. Perhaps it has a rider reaching out to someone leaving the ship, but it might get too complex for simple and clean? I almost imagine a logo-like quality. 2. "Lunch on a skyscraper" with fantasy and/or scifi characters. https://mentalfloss.com/article/502243/10-fascinating-facts-about-lunch-atop-skyscraper 3. Atomic explosion with dragons flying away from, or toward it. Optional: one dragon in focus with a rider. Optional 2: eating a sandwich, zen-like. Option 3: instead of a sandwich, a map. https://www.google.com/search?q=atomic+explosion 4. A wizard facing off against a spaceship or exo-skeleton warrior, "you shall not pass" Gandalf style. That would convey the two genres pretty well. 5. Your ideas... Where this art would be displayed: It's artwork for my website, and I'd like it to fill the page. 1. Static doesn't work very well. Seeing a dragon flying at an angle is much more lively. I understand the professional term is drama. 2. I prefer more of a scene shot than character design. When people enter the website this scene would greet them and will draw them in to explore further. Some space would be good. 3. In a scene shot, I'd prefer for the scene to not fill the whole frame, so the viewer can see a perspective, looking in on the drama. Here are two sites with winning website designs which can show you how your art will be featured: https://www.impactbnd.com/blog/18-a…te-designs https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/…signs-list You can see the art is the main aspect of the sites. But it also works in a certain way: 1. Some of them are attention-grabbing and loud, some are understated and subtle. None are overwhelming. 2. The characters/objects are usually in action, at an angle, or similar. 3. They leave empty space for people to not feel threatened, but feel like they want to explore further - they are invited into our world. 4. Most of them need space for a bit of text. ----- This brief has become very long. So I put this at the end for those who wanted it. Added text on emotion 3. The emotion or mindset should follow the personality behind the brand. Three ideas for you to work with here, depending on what you connect with. Note that if you feel the emotion conveyed should be different that's cool. Let's talk about it. - "The young monk" who is always open to sit with you for a beer, but would likely discuss philosophy and can definitely take a punch if a bar fight breaks out. Feeling conveyed: "This is cool, I need to see more." - "The elitist sage" who is wise and happy to share his wisdom, but knows he's better than you. Kind of a snob, but someone you want to be friends with. Feeling conveyed: "I want to be a part of whatever is going on. This is the 'in' group." - "The no b/s explorer" who is most at home in the wild, taking time to appreciate nature. He doesn't suffer fools easily, though. He knows who he is and goes for it with a zen-like quality. Feeling conveyed: "I am calm and relaxed. I look forward to exploring the world."
I am looking for art which would be the base for my branding, rather than just a picture I'd hang. What you create would be used as inspiration for future designs in my brand, and what the website project will be built around. I appreciate the artist's job isn't a simple one, and I appreciate your work and the space you need for creativity. Remember, while I was happy to post ideas, do feel free to come up with your own or riff off of mine. Please send me a message with any questions, or if you'd like for me to look at your portfolio and say what style I connect with and think would be a fit.
