The Art of theTalking Stick

We sell Native American Talking Sticks and are launching a line for children. Each stick will come with a children's illustrated book on the legend of the Talking Stick and directions for the parent of teacher on how to use the Talking Stick for communication with children.

this is for the whole book. My first venture doing anything like this. Open for suggestions that will help the process along. Giving you creative freedom on style, but seeing as this is a childrens book I do want it to be vibrant and fun. Only looking for sketches to determine if we are a fit and then we can get more detailed if so. I currently don't plan on selling this book but having it accompany talking sticks for children in an effort to open the door for better communications skills.
I am looking for someone to illustrate a childrens book in vibrant fun colors and design that will draw the readers in and really tell the story through pictures. The story is included here in the description.

The Legend of the Talking Stick
It was time for the mothers to go off and gather fruits and berries for the village.
The honor of watching the children was given to the grandmothers who were no longer able to gather.
While the children were sleeping, under the careful watch of grandmother, Crow and Magpie, were having a terrible argument outside the lodge.
Caaaa-caaaaw screamed crow
Kaaack Kack yelled magpie
Speaking at the same time, the birds could not hear the other bird’s point of view about which tree belonged to which bird.
Grandmother tried to quiet the birds,
“Shooooo you silly birds or you will wake the children!!” She whispered loudly waving her hands above her head.

Unsuccessful she called on the wisdom of the mighty sacred eagle for help.
“Oh great eagle,” grandmother pleaded, can you please get these birds to be quiet, I don’t want them to wake the children!”

Eagle flew toward the noisy pair yelling as he approached.
In the midst of their arguing, they neither heard nor saw Eagle. Eagle yelled louder and came closer.
“Caaaaaw-caaaaaaw-caaaaaaw” cried crow
flapping his wings so hard he nearly fell from the tree branch.
“Kaaaaack-Kack” cried Magpie, flapping harder with his wings

Crow and Magpie were screaming and flapping their wings so hard, that they never heard nor saw eagle. With out realizing Eagle was there they hit one of Eagles wings and dislodged a sacred feather. The feather landed upon a small branch.

Crow and Magpie were deeply saddened as it is considered a great offense to touch Eagle, but to dislodge a feather was worse.
“O Eagle,” cried crow “ we did not hear you so near!!”
Magpie said “O Eagle I am so very sorry you have lost a sacred feather!”
They realized that their loud talk and harsh words had become more important then solving their problems.
Crow and Magpie went to gather the feather and returned it to Eagle.
Crow said “ we have disturbed the children and torn from your wing a sacred feather. We return it to you and ask for forgiveness.”

Eagle told Crow and Magpie “take the feather and give it to grandmother, tell her to attach the feather to a branch. Decorate the branch with beads, leather and fur to make it even more beautiful. Hang it in the lodge and teach others how to create and us this fine looking stick.”

Eagle continued “We will call this sacred Item a talking stick. Tell the people when they gather and the ears of others may be shut, to bring out the talking stick to create a safe space to hear and be heard. Only the holder of the stick may speak until everyone has had their say. Pass the stick until all have spoken.”

Grandmother gathered the feather and branch. She and crow and Magpie were so honored to have learned this great lesson from Eagle. From that day forward every grandmother has told the story of Crow and Magpie teaching the children to use the talking stick so that they can learn to listen with out interruption, as well as speak freely from the heart.
