John Brewer got their new icon or button by running a design contest:
Design an app icon for ResistorVision that stands out from 100 other resistor apps in app store

We use computer vision to create amazing iPhone apps.
What's your vision?
An icon for ResistorVision. ResistorVision is an app that instantly tells you the value of any standard beige 4-band resistor by reading the color bands on the resistor. The ResistorVision's unique features are: 1. Camera. Instead of dialing in the color codes on the touch screen, you simply point your iPhone's camera at the resistor to read its value. 2. Speed/Convenience. Once you point the camera at the resistor, its value appears _instantly_. Without any messing with dials, spinners, or other UI. There are over 100 resistor apps in the iPhone app store right now (see attached competitor icon image files). The goal is to produce an icon that: 1. Describes the product at a glance, 2. Stands out from the other resistor apps in the app store such that more customers click on it based on the icon alone. You can find more information about the product at ResistorVision.com. The home page has an animated GIF of the product in action. Note that the color balance on the resistors in that picture is not ideal. Do an image search on "resistor" to get a better idea of what a typical resistor looks like. IMPORTANT: Although resistors come in several body colors (notably beige and blue), any resistor depicted in the icon MUST HAVE A BEIGE BODY.
