RailModeller Pro got their new icon or button by running a design contest:
Create a Mac OS X app icon for our new casual CAD app!
Check out RailModeller Pro's Icon or button contest…
Our Mac OS X app is a specialized CAD application for casual computer users enabling them to design layouts for model railroads.
What's your vision?
We need a new application icon for our Mac OS X app. Ideally it should communicate the general idea of planning a model railroad layout, i.e. laying down tracks and planning how the train lines are running around the layout. Railroad tracks, train lines, some CAD-ish theme or a combination of all the above could be a starting point. If you've got an awesome, completely different idea: great, we'd love to see it! A casual, not too technical look would be awesome - It must however be obvious from the icon that it's not about any kind of "train game". Huge steam trains and locomotives as a central motive are off limits :-) The icon should fit well into the OS X ecosystem and not look out-of-place in the OS X dock. We could imagine something more akin to a the Maps or Pages app icons would look more 'friendly' or approachable to casual computer users than a solemn, symbolic iTunes style icon. We've attached sample layouts created by our users as well as a rough sketch of our UI as an inspiration. The legacy app (similar functionality, will be replace with the new app though) can be found at http://www.railmodeller.com/
