Glimpse is an upcoming app for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch that allows users to easily extract business intelligence from their spreadsheets or databases by loading data and creating interactive charts. The app allows you to download your spreadsheets or connect to your database, and then provides a variety of ways to generate different kinds of charts (line, bar, pie, etc) from the data contained therein. The graphs it will generate will be interactive, in that the user will be able to zoom, or "drill", into the data to see more of the underlying details. The graphs will also make it easy for a user to quickly identify trends, outliers, and other statistical features of sets of data.
For example, if the user generates a graph of their Excel spreadsheet of sales for their chain of businesses, they will be able to quickly identify that sales on the East coast have been increasing over the past year, whereas sales on the West coast have been decreasing. They will then be able to generate a map from their spreadsheet data that graphically shows the locations of all the stores and each of the stores relative profitability so that they can then perform further analysis of the sales trends. In this way, the user will be able to iteratively and graphically explore their data using the intuitive touch interface of the iPad or iPhone rather than pouring over the plain numbers.
The target user of the app will be a corporate professional who wants to turn simple text data into charts and images. It should appeal both the non-technical business people as well as technical database folk. The user will be creating sophisticated interactive graphs out of plain raw data.
The icon should stand out from the crowd, but shouldn't be too gaudy. The color scheme is completely up to you, as is the content of the icon. It should be something that a business user is comfortable with, so it shouldn't be too "cutesy". The focus of the app (creating interactive graphics from raw data) should be somehow reflected in the icon's design, but how you decide to implement that is up to you.
One effect that I personally like (but by no means require for the design) is the icons that utilize the rounded corners of the image to contribute to a 3D effect. For example, see the "Comic Zeal" app icon (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/comi…16881?mt=8). I also tend to agree with the guidelines about iPhone icon design at: http://pixelresort.com/blog/iphone-…practises/
The icon should look good at 57x57 up to 512x512. Illustrator, SVG, or PSD file with layers please (Illustrator vector graphic .ai file is preferred but not required). The icon should not have the "gloss" effect that many other apps have. The app will be available in multiple languages, so the image should not contain any text. And no stock icons or clip art please.
