West Virginia Forest Products Cooperative
Tell us a bit about who you are and the people you reach
We are a non-profit in Southern West Virginia whose mission is to establish West Virginians as artisan furniture manufacturers. We want to marry the tradition of Appalachians making things with their hands with new technology such as state-of-the art CNC machines that allow artisans to create designs in a software that then precisely cut the pieces. We need to both recruit members to the co-op and sell their products (marketing of members products is a big part of what we do). The function of the website and hence logo is primarily to sell the products. The products will be high-end furniture, wood sculpture, bowls, etc. The customers will be people who are looking for something unique, they appreciate art and are willing to pay a premium price for the highest quality of craftsmanship from Appalachian hardwoods. They are also going to align with our core value of sustainability and also want to support Appalachians doing well for themselves and creating jobs, especially through creativity and entrepreneurship. Think something like a $3000 oak rocking chair or a $70,000 cherry staircase made by a small business in a tiny WV holler. Our customers will also love the outdoors, travel, and art. I expect most of our customers will be in the millennial or baby-boomer generation and traditionally women make most furniture-purchasing decisions. Though furniture and wood products are the biggest part of our co-operative, we also encourage non-timber forest businesses to join (e.g. cultivating ginseng or goldenseal). We may very well have customers from WV, but I expect many of our early customers to be from cities within about 5 hours from Southern WV - Washington DC, Columbus OH, Cincinatti, Pittsburgh PA, Charlotte, NC. Many of these people would identify themselves as "Appalachians" and may have grown up in towns even though they now live in bigger cities where they enjoy more job and cultural opportunities as well as a more progressive mindset. Equity and inclusion of all kinds is important to our organization and our customers will love to see this cultural shift in Rural Appalachia and know that their purchases contribute to this work.

We don't have our website built yet, but one of the ideas we have for photos we will put on there is to place our furniture pieces out in beautiful natural environments in West Virginia, such as near a stream, waterfall, woods, trees, cliffs. The idea being to see that connection between this beautiful place that we love (West Virginians are very proud) that have blessed us with this abundant resource - we're in the middle of some of largest and most beautiful hardwood forest in the world. The photos will convey beauty, elegance and luxury and also connection to this wild place that has blessed us with so much natural beauty.
