Design4 got their new app by running a design contest:
Help Astrid with a new app design
Check out Design4's App contest…
We are a to-do list with native applications for Android, iPhone, and the web. People create lists, share those lists with other people, and invite them to create tasks together. We help people get more done with help from friends. Users can share lists with a select group or share tasks publicly on Facebook or Twitter. Our users include moms who share lists with their husbands, girlfriends, nannies, as well as GTD life hacker types who mostly use the app for their personal productivity. Users describe our applications as simple yet powerful, and many users open the app multiple times a day. See the current iPhone design at: http://bit.ly/qWNtEg
What's your vision?
Please design 3 screens for our iPhone application 1) View of lists - Users need to be able to create new lists. They should be able to quickly scroll through their lists and switch from one list to another. Each list should have a count of tasks inside, as well as an indication of whether the list is shared with other people. There also should be an unread notification indicator (e.g. a blue dot -- see uploaded photo). 2) View of tasks within a list - Users should be able to quickly see whether the list they are viewing is private or shared. If it is shared they should be able to see a list of faces of list members. Each task should show a task description, and (optionally) priority color and the due date. In addition, there should be a row to add a new task. There should be a button to see the latest activity in the list, as well as a button to edit list settings. 3) Task Edit Page - Editing tasks should present the user with a very simple interface from the start while allowing for more complex options to be accessed through an expanding area or button to a different screen.
Notes: - Overall, we are looking for a sleek, fun, peaceful design that users would not feel stressed in, even if they are faced with lots of tasks to complete. - Consider using a physical metaphor/textures as the basis of your design. For example, a notebook, planner, a wooden table, or a shelf with items. - As for colors, we prefer something bright and includes a blue. 60% of our current users are women, so we'd like a design (look and colors) that would appeal to them without alienating our male users. - Currently, clicking on the header bar currently brings up all your activity for the application. Alternative header designs could be envisioned as well. - Clicking on tasks tab at the bottom shows all tasks assigned to yourself - Clicking on friends tab shows all the friends with whom you share tasks. - Tab navigation on the bottom is optional. If you choose to not use tabs on the bottom, an alternative navigation to these view would be required. - Designs that are in accordance with Apple's Human Interface Guidelines (http://bit.ly/pU9VfL ) are strongly preferred. Other applications we like: - Facebook Messenger - Foodspotting - Hashable - Foursquare - Square The astrid_fame image and "illustrator file with many of the images : buttons currently used in astrid" are available if they are helpful but are not required to be use in the any design.

Designers across the globe delivered design magic.
Design4 collaborated with designers to refine their ideas
When design entries come in, you can rate them so designers know what you’re looking for in your logo design.
99designs has great collaboration tools so you can pinpoint and capture your ideas
And then… they selected a winner!
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
